Molly and Malha

‘Malha-Malha-Malha!!! For the gazillionth time, stop pulling so hard on your leash!!! You are such a naughty dog!’

Malha woke up with a start, when her dream ended with Ramon being very angry at Malha. It made her feel so sad. She was dreaming of the walk they made together that same afternoon. Malha was so happy Ramon took her for a walk, that she just couldn’t contain herself. It is so much fun outside. Nice smelling grass, branches, twigs, and funny shaped balls called pinecones to play with. People everywhere, which means head-scratches and new dog friends everywhere!

Must. Hurry. Now. Ramon!

But Ramon wasn’t amused. Even worse, he used his scary heavy voice, and didn’t gave her kisses and hugs when they came home. She was send to her dogbed, to cool off.

Cool off??? She didn’t understand. It wasn’t hot at all. And she just wanted to share her exhilarating joy of facing all the wonders of the outside together with Ramon.

What an awful dream it was. What ever could she do to make Ramon just as happy as she is when they are outside?

And then she knew. She thought of her dear friend Molly, she met in the park. Molly is just a little bit older than she is, and Malha looked up at her. Molly is huge, and she has the same colors Malha has. Black, reddish brown, and a little bit of white. So they are practically twins. Molly is sweet, and gentle, but likes to play just a little rougher than pretty little girls ought to do. Malha was convinced Molly could be her big sister. Maybe Molly could tell her what to do to make Ramon happy again.

So the next time Malha and Molly met in the park, Malha asked Molly for help.

‘Oh yes, I know what you are talking about. When Ramon takes you out for a walk, you are supposed to walk beside him with the leash hanging loose. When Ramon tells you to sit down, and separates the leash, then you can run and play and act silly.’

Malha scratched behind her ears. ‘Do I really have to walk that slow? But I want to have fun!!!’

‘Do you wish to learn or not? I can help you to learn to follow, it isn’t all that bad you know.’ Molly gave Malha a nudge which made Malha tumble. ‘Come, first we play.’ Malha was laughing loudly. It was just so much fun playing with Molly.

And while they played, Molly held her leash at Malha. ‘Come try and take the other end of the leash.’ Malha still thought they were playing, so she ran after Molly laughing and growling.

When Malha had the leash between her teeth, Molly made Malha run next to her. Still Malha giggled.

This was so much fun!

When Molly stopped her pace, she told Malha to pull as hard as she could.

Off course Malha couldn’t win. Molly is so much bigger and stronger. But Malha felt so happy. She let go of the leash, and walked beside Molly.

‘You see? Just see it like it is. Playing together, not only to make you feel happy, but also the one you’re playing with. Then they want to play with you even more!’

Molly was wise. She was absolutely right. This was a lot of fun. And it wasn’t all that bad to follow.

So when it was time for puppy school again, Malha felt confident. She so much wanted to show how much she had learned from her friend.

Ramon stood before Malha, and smiled. Are you ready for school today? Please show me the big girl I know you are. You can do this my little dragon!’ Ramon cuddled Malha before she took off her backpack. Then gave her a big kiss, and off they went.

And you know what?

Malha proudly followed Ramon with the leash hanging loose. And both of them were so happy that learning new things at puppy school, wasn’t all that bad and hard. It was just the same as playing together.

Read this story in Dutch! (My first translated one!)

‘Kuzco!!! Don’t be too exited!!! Your tail….. watch your tail….’ Joyce yelled when Kuzco and little Malha jumped around after one another with the wind pushing them forward.

‘Why can’t you be too exited daddy? It’s just so much fun running around in the park.’ Malha her little feet had to make double the pace, to stay beside Kuzco.

‘You don’t have to worry about that yet. You’re just a wee lass with a tail as straight as a stick with a pig’s tail at the end. When you are a bit older, and your tail looks like mine…. thén it’s time to get your excitement under control.’ Malha looked at Kuzco and shrugged her ears. ‘How very strange that is Kuzco…. Can we still play some on the grass?’

You see….

There is something very special about a cocker spaniel called Kuzco. It’s his tail. It is a very peculiar little thing. His long curly hair makes it look like a waving flag, but something happens to it when Kuzco is extremely happy. It spins like the rotors on a helicopter.

And because of that, Kuzco learned a very important lesson. When the wind blows harder than you can blow with your cheeks as round as a balloon, it is imperative for Kuzco not to be too happy.

On one particularly windy day, Joyce and Ramon decided to take Kuzco for a walk down the beach. But when it’s windy in the city, there is a gushing wind near sea.

Kuzco loves the beach so very much, that all his happiness couldn’t stay inside his body. And within seconds, his tail was spinning like a helicopter. All went well while he stayed between the dunes, but once he entered the beach, Kuzco was nowhere to be found.

Joyce and Ramon looked left and right, back and in front of them…. But no Kuzco. But where they didn’t look, was above their heads.

There he was, high in the sky. Even though he was a little scared, he was amazed at all the things he could see from up here.

He saw a bird hovering next to him, yelling at him in a language he didn’t understand. And he saw strange paper triangles that were on a leash. When he saw the tiny little people running with laughter after the leash, he immediately made a reminder for himself to suggest such a leash for himself.

Maybe Joyce and Ramon would laugh just as hard when he would run as fast as he could, wearing this same leash. It was a strange and peculiar world up here. And he couldn’t quite made his mind up if it was more fun up here than down there.

‘Kuzco, Kuzco!!!! Stop having so much fun up there!!!! It keeps you high in the sky!!!‘ Joyce yelled as loud as she could, because the wind made her voice never reach so far. But Kuzco’s flappy ears were also high in the sky, so he could hear her anyway.

‘But how do I stop having fun, when it’s so much fun???’

‘Think of having to go home right this instant! ‘

‘Right this instant?? But we just got here!?!’, Kuzco thought. And the second he thought of having to go home, his tail stopped spinning of disappointment, and he fell down.

Joyce was just at the right spot to catch him, so he wouldn’t hurt himself.

‘Your tail is spinning so hard, that when the wind gets beneath it, it makes you fly. And you can’t just go fly in the air, that is dangerous! You almost hit that seagull up there, didn’t you see? He’s pretty angry at you.’

So after that whole ordeal, Kuzco taught himself to keep his enthusiasm down, when the wind is blowing hard.

And then the strangest thing happened.

While Kuzco tried his best not to be overly excited, Malha stopped running next to him. Out of nowhere she bursts into an almost hysterical laughter, and dropped on the floor laughing. She just couldn’t stop.

‘What’s the matter little Malha? Stop goofing around and come join us.’ Joyce walked back to Malha, to come and get her. And then Joyce saw the reason why Malha didn’t come. Malha couldn’t help it. Because of the wind blowing through her hair, her unusually long eye lashes tickled in her ears. And it tickled so very much, Malha could only roll over laughing, and try to itch the tickles away. Kuzco had to laugh really hard about this. It was funny to watch, and now he wasn’t the only one whom was bothered by the wind.

So now there is also something very special about a cocker spaniel named Malha, it seems. It’s her amazing long eye lashes. It’s a very peculiar thing, those lashes. It makes her eyes stand out ever so beautiful, but once the wind is blowing harder than you can blow with your cheeks as round as a balloon, Malha has to wear a tiny rubber band around her face to keep her long, long lashes from tickling in her ears.

Whatever happened to Benjamin?

It was like an escape from the zoo. Everybody running around, loud noises everywhere. The only one wise enough to lay low, was observing from his dogbed. Kuzco was amazed.

It seemed like the world  turned upside down. Kuzco is usually the one who is jumping, running, and barking, but today everyone except for Kuzco is doing so. Joyce is running after Benjamin. Benjamin is trying his best to avoid.

Jools is angry at everyone for being in such a fuzz, and Ramon is trying to help Joyce while brushing his teeth.

Toothpaste is dripping everywhere, and all the hair flying in the air from Benjamin’s evading maneuvers, eventually stick to the toothpaste that fell on the ground, making it look like little ants wearing a fur coat.

Eventually Benjamin was caught, making a very dramatic cry while he was put in his carrier.

‘O dear, why is Benjamin in a carrier? Something must be terribly wrong!’ Kuzco got out of his dog bed, and sniffed at Benjamin, who’s head pushed at the bar of the carrier.

‘Why are you in there Ben, where are you going?’ Kuzco asked Benjamin. But Benjamin was in shock, he was so scared he couldn’t answer. While it was very amusing to see what happened earlier, this made Kuzco rather upset.

Joyce and Ramon put on their coats, and left with Benjamin in his carrier.

‘O dear, o dear’… Kuzco kept mumbling in himself. He looked out the window and saw them leave in the car. The car is usually a sign of fun stuff happening, but even Joyce and Ramon looked worried when they left. He grabbed Jaap in his neck, and shook him around.

‘Gggrrrrwwww!!! Why is nobody telling me what’s going on?’ Kuzco let go of Jaap, and while Jaap was ready to land, stuffing came out of Jaap’s nose and leg. ‘O no, I’m sorry Jaap! You’re hurt. When Joyce comes home, I will ask her to fix you.’

He didn’t have to wait for long, because Joyce came home. But without Benjamin and Ramon.

‘He there, my lovelies.’ Joyce smiled when she came into the room. She sat on the ground, and Kuzco and Jools were sitting next to her. ‘Ramon is going to work, and Benjamin is at the vet. He is a little sick, and has to be examined to get better. Tonight we can pick him up again. But then you both have to be real nice to him. Because you both know that it is no fun being at the vet.’

Jools gave her a nod and a purr, and went back to her spot to lie in the sun again. But Kuzco started crying. ‘O no, it’s all my fault,’ he sobbed.

‘You silly Kuzco, how can this be you fault?’ Benjamin is just a little sick, and needs to get better. The vet will do that. You know that right?’

‘No, no, Benjamin is sick, and I have hurt Jaap, because I was angry because I didn’t know what was going on. And now Jaap is hurt and so is Benjamin, and if Jaap isn’t getting better, so won’t Benjamin!’

Joyce smiled and wiped Kuzco’s tears dry. ‘Come and help me get Jaap. I will get my sowing kit, and clear the table so I can make ‘Operation Jaap ’ happening.’

Kuzco watched how Joyce was working on Jaap. He was proud of his little friend Jaap, for not making a peep during procedure. He taught him well.

When Joyce was ready, she wiped her forehead with the bandage that was left. ‘Here is your friend dear Kuzco, be careful with him the next hour, because he has many stitches. It was a lot of work, but he made it through. You can go cuddle with him now, but don’t lick the bandage off, or it will leave an awful scar.’

‘O Joyce, I’m so happy. I know Ben is going to be alright now too.’ He gave her a kiss, and grabbed Jaap carefully in the neck to take him to his dogbed.’

A couple of hours later, the phone rang, and Joyce left to pick up Benjamin. Off course Kuzco kept a keen eye on Jaap, but his ears were focused on outside. When he heard the car pull over, he jumped around, he was so nervous. The carrier was put on the ground, and when Joyce removed the bar, Benjamin carefully stepped out.

‘Benjamin, Benjamin, how are you doing. Did they hurt you. Jaap was hurt too, but Joyce fixed him, so I knew you would be alright as well. Are you-are you?’ Kuzco jumped on Benjamin, sniffing, and asking all his questions.

But Benjamin needed his space to recover, so Joyce told Kuzco to stay back, and when Benjamin would wake up, he could calmly approach Ben and ask his questions calm and quietly. Kuzco kept staring at Benjamin, he had a giant hole in his fur, and little pieces of dried blood on the pale skin. He couldn’t wait to ask all his questions.

When Benjamin woke up, he was surprised of all the attention from everybody. He felt a lot better after his sleep, so he was all ready to tell his story to Jools and Kuzco. ‘Wow, Benjamin, you don’t even have a band aid on, even while you’ve been stabbed by needle. Jaap is stabbed too, but he does have a band aid.

You rock Ben!’ Kuzco gave Benjamin a tab on his shoulder, and Benjamin smiled his biggest smile knowing he was missed, worried for, and loved. Even by those whom he thought, wouldn’t.

Where could Kuzco be?

Where could Kuzco be?

Even Ramon came searching too.

The tale of his royal highness

The tale of his royal highness is a rather special one. Special in a way, because he wasn’t really royal to begin with. He made himself royal, and I can’t really blame him.

When he first arrived to his estate, he was only a guest. He would return to his own mansion within 2 weeks’ time. But almost immediately he decided that this was to be his kingdom, and in no way to kingdom’s come, he would leave in that dreadful little basket again. It was within a day or two that his orders were given, and there was no choice but to aid them. All doors must not close under any circumstance, and the supply of his daily need from the fountain of youth, must be obtained.

water supply

There was no choice but to obey. Not listen to his commands would mean a lament of cries that would never seem to stop….until you’d give in. And believe me, you would give in as well. Not only because the cries were so loud and nerve wrecking, but also because he knew he was too cute and cuddly not to obey.

to plead

The whole house was divided by realms. That was easier to cope his existence in his new surroundings.

living room

The living room was a place where he could totally live out. He could run high and low, soft and hard, and lay cozy and warm, and chillingly cool.

dinner time

There was place to drop his royal droppings, and a place to be served breakfast, lunch and dinner, as royally as possible.

Even for a pedicure and manicure there was a place made especially for him to uphold his royal self-made status. The hallway was the strategic place of all, he could oversee his whole kingdom from up there, but even so, he would prefer to stay in the room where there was a place of nice and soft pillows and blankets, placed on a huge mattress that was as bouncy as it was soft. All of his royal butt, would be there almost the entire part of the day.

royal bum

He really loved his kingdom, and even loved the humans who lived there. Even though the woman called Joyce, had to be taken care of.

 Joyce ill

first aid

She was clearly not well, and he knew he would have to take care of her, to make his stay as comfort as possible.

Ramon and Spooky

The other one, the male human, he already knew when he was only a little kitten. That man was called Ramon, and he usually sat behind a desk with a computer on it, where the easiest way to get the attention he deserved, was to lay on a panel with little pebbles, where Ramon rested his hands.

Ramon sitting behind desk

It was best life he could ever imagine to have. And he thought it would for ever and ever be like this, as it would fit his desires as a king.

love this life

But one day it would all be over, and he wasn’t quite prepared for that.

baby Benjamin

On one particular day, when he had his realm all by himself, Joyce and Ramon returned with a plastic basket that they put down in the living room. They opened the lid, and there it was. A tiny little kitten, black and white, and with a really dirty nose. ‘What in devils name did they bring into his realm? Was this thing to stay?’ He took a fast sniff as he strolled by, and decided to oversee this new arrived problem from out the hallway.

‘O dear’, he thought after a night’s sleep, when he still saw that tiny little devil laying in his basket, ‘it is still here. What to do with this terrible curse?’

But overlooking this huge problem from a safe distance, he got a splendid idea. He could use this little one to do whatever he, as a king, would desire that little rascal to do. He would be his servant. It was the most brilliant idea a king could ever get, and he immediately put it to use.

Benjamin the servant

The little kitten felt so alone and cold without the warmth of his nest. He missed his mommy so much, and all his brothers and sisters.

Joyce was there to keep him warm at night, and play with him during the day, but he missed his kin.

hide and seek

So when Spooky told him he would take care of him when he would serve him as a king, Benjamin gladly took the offer.

The times Joyce wasn’t there to play with him, or take a nap with him, he was allowed to be near the king’s present.

And when it was needed, Benjamin worked his tiny little but off to aid every need of the king. Spooky even saw more advantages with the arrival of Benjamin. There was food, special food, that was only for tiny little kittens to grow. Under no circumstance he was allowed to have some of Benjamin’s food. Well, that was surely a mistake. Who did they think they were speaking to? A royal highness may eat whatever he desires to.

So when it was feeding time, and Joyce was out of the picture, Spooky gave a swing with his royal butt and kicked Benjamin away from his plate. But with each and every bite he took from Benjamin’s kitten food, he gained an ounce. So when a week had passed, Spooky was doubled the size he was before.

fat cat

He told little Benjamin that this was just a way to show him how royal he is. A king is as great as his size, so this only showed how unbelievably great a lord and master he must be, and Benjamin should honour him. Benjamin was astonished, he never in his life had seen anything like this, therefore Spooky must be right.

grooming time

So Spooky only needed to ring his royal bell, and Benjamin was there to wash the king, groom the king, make way for the king when demanded, and made sure when the king moved from one place to another, the floor was clean, so Spooky’s belly would stay as white as snow.

sweep the floor

The only thing Benjamin envied, was Spooky’s beautiful throne. Joyce made him a new one, because he couldn’t sit in his old one any more. It was big and comfy, with a golden crown embroidered on it. He longed for a moment to take a nap in that throne.

wouldn't it be great

I want now

He once asked Spooky nicely, and once tried to slap Spooky out of it, but that was the gravest mistake he ever made, and had to suffer the consequences.

Until one day, the birds outside sang their songs loud to hear, and wake Benjamin up.

waking up

He listened to some of the words, and found it a bit strange. The little birds sang about a dog.

puppy Kuzco

A dog that was soon to come to Spooky’s kingdom and be the earl of puppydom. He rushed to Spooky to tell what he heard, but Spooky laughed. ‘Hahaha, you silly servant. There is no dog coming here, and most certainly no earl. Now come and drink with me.’

let's drink

But in the next few days, all kinds of strange objects entered the kingdom. And both Joyce and Ramon were building a very large bed. A beautiful pillow was made with the name Kuzco embroidered on it, and was put in the bed. ‘You see, there is really a dog coming, and I think his name is Kuzco,’ Benjamin said to Spooky. But Spooky only made a frown, ‘Off course not you silly servant, don’t you see that this is my new bed. It just the right size for me, it fits a king.’

What's this?

‘But the name your highness, who’s name is that?’ Spooky was a little annoyed with the question because he didn’t immediately knew the right answer. And then it came to him, ‘Yes, that is it, it is a brand. “Kuzco” is the brand where the fabric comes from.’

a bed fit for a king

With a self-contented purr, he stepped onto the pillow in the new bed. ‘Oh dear, I will almost faint, it’s just so wonderful and perfect. I will sleep in my new bed tonight.’

what to do?

And while he kneaded the perfect spot with his sleep mask ready to wear, he held his head high in the air, as if he had to think real hard about his offer, but decided that a king should be noble at times. ‘Benjamin, you can sleep in my throne if you like.’

good sleep

They both had the best sleep they ever had, and Benjamin was so happy, he couldn’t wait to serve his noble king today.

best sleep ever

The day went by, and just when the king was about to get a manicure, the front door opened, and Joyce and Ramon arrived. But they were not alone. Spooky had to rub his eyes of disbelieve.

There was a little puppy in Joyce her arms.

welcome puppy Kuzco

baby's going to sleep

watching baby sleep

Spooky was shocked, he only heard the high pitched voices, but no words. And when he saw the puppy lay in hís new bed, well….he was baffled.

He got on his throne, and with a big huff he let his body drop, to never come out of it again!

everything is stupid

He couldn’t believe he had to share his kingdom with this earl of puppydom. An earl who isn’t even potty-trained.

little accident

And to top it all off, carries around a big stuffed sheep and toys that squeak. Really, is there no shame in being a dog?

Weeks went by, and off course Spooky got off his throne. To hear strange noises from your own belly, is never a good thing, even when you’re an angry and offended royal highness.

Everywhere Spooky went, that horrible little fur ball was there as  well. There was absolutely no escaping it. So when Spooky was relaxing in the empty hamper in the sun, he enjoyed his quiet little time.

tag, you're it

Little indeed, because the little earl wiggled his tail and jumped to the hamper. ‘There you are Spooky, come play with me. Let’s play hide and seek. Tag, you’re it!’ When Kuzco duck away, Spooky gave him a firm slap on his head. ‘Ouch, why did you do that?’ Kuzco cried.

good conversation

‘Let’s have a good conversation you and I.’ Spooky stretched his back, and then his paws, to sit on the royal chair.  ‘It’s not that I don’t like you, I’m your king, and I love all of my subjects. I know you are just a kid, but I think it’s high time you learn some of my rules. First of all, I do not play. And if you are an earl as they say you are, act like on. Take a good look at me. If you do as I show you, you will be respected.

And as for that bed of yours, I co-own it. So if I want to take my royal nap, I will, with or without you in it.’ Kuzco wiped his tears, and shook paws on it.

shake paw

All went well for long time, and everyone knew their place. Kuzco became a real earl indeed. He copied Spooky in everything, the only difference being Benjamin.

Benjamin was still Spooky’s servant, but in Benjamin’s off-time he loved playing tag with Kuzco, and when Kuzco was outside, he watched him from the windowsill.

That’s when one night Benjamin saw something strange in the bushes. It was late in the evening, it was Kuzco his last walk, so he couldn’t quite see well enough to know what it was. But then, only moments after Kuzco passed by, he saw little eyes glowing in the dark. It was a cat. A lady cat!

When Kuzco returned from his walk, Benjamin asked if he too seen the little cat in the bush. But Kuzco was far too busy sniffing the grass to notice.

playing in the rain

‘Next time, will you keep an eye open for me? She looked like she was in need of help.’ Benjamin asked Kuzco.

So the next evening when Joyce, Ramon and Kuzco walked by the same bush as the evening before, Kuzco sniffed at the spot Benjamin told him about. Benjamin was right! He smelled her too. Kuzco barked at Joyce and Ramon, hoping they would take a look with him to find her.

good boy

‘What is it buddy, what do smell?’ asked Joyce, and just as she bowed down, she saw a frightened little cat. ‘O dear, are you lost sweetheart? It’s rather cold, would you want to come with us. We have food if you’re hungry, which I bet you are, and a warm place to sleep.’

The little cat was too scared to come out and join the nice man and lady, but she was so hungry, wet and cold, that she overcame her fear. Ramon held her in his arms as they walked back home, and Kuzco danced happy around them. ‘Benjamin, you were right! There was a little cat outside. Here she is.’ Benjamin took one look, and he was totally in love.

the prettiest lady ever seen

She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, and he couldn’t wait to clean her up, and snuggle together by the stove. But he had to wait for Spooky. The king must approve. But Spooky wasn’t as charmed by her as Benjamin.

The next day, three strange men entered the front door, and together with Joyce and Ramon, they walked towards the living room. ‘We haven’t had any calls about a missing cat, but we’ll know where she comes from as soon as we scan her. She won’t be any trouble to you any more sir.’ One of the three men said. The little cat had hidden herself in the toiletry.

She was terribly frightened. The three men captured her before, and they weren’t friendly at all. ‘Oh, I see it already, it’s a stray cat, she has ticks and fleas all over her. I will scan her, but I believe we have met before. She hasn’t got a chip code.’ When she didn’t have one indeed, they wanted to push her in a cage and take her with them. Joyce and Ramon begged them to let her stay, until someone claimed her. But they wouldn’t want to hear of it. ‘Rules are rules madam.’

The three men walked outside to put her in the car. But they didn’t know that while they were checking the little cat, Kuzco broke the lock of the cage. So when they wanted to slide the cage in the back of the car, the cage broke open, and the little cat ran away as fast as she could. ‘Well, that’s a shame. But we will catch her a next time. If you see her again, give us a call.’ The three men got in the car and drove away.

sad Kuzco

Everyone was sad. She was such a sweet little cat. And now she ran away into the cold again. ‘Well, one thing is for sure. We will never call them again if we see her. They even lied about the ticks and fleas. They are supposed to help, not scare the little thing away.’ Ramon said to Joyce while they drank their tea.

Three nights went by, and no little cat was seen. But then, at the fourth evening when Ramon and Kuzco were outside for their walk, she appeared again.

‘He there little lady, we’re so sorry the way they treated you. Will you forgive us, and come home with us? You will never have to leave again.’ Ramon said to her.

true love

She let herself carry home with him, and this time Benjamin didn’t wait for Spooky’s approval. He gave her a little kiss, and started washing her.

you may have some of mine

When she was all settled in, and lived there for almost a year, she sometimes sat behind the window. ‘Do you miss it Jools? Would you want to go back someday?’ Spooky asked her when she gazed out the window. ‘No, I don’t miss it any more, I love being here with all of you. I would never want to leave.’

looking outside

That was exactly the right answer to give, and because it was precisely a year today that  she lived with them, they decided to throw a jolly good party. And the best part of the feast, was the official welcoming by his royal highness Spooky.

It was a true honour, and they all were happy and celebrating, and love living their lives in the kingdom of his royal highness.

It was their home.

Sherlock Kuzco and the case of the missing cookie recipe

It’s autumn. Summer has just left, only to leave behind a few dots of green here and there. And today is autumn at it roughest. Wind is blowing hard, leaves in all colors are shooting by, dark clouds as far as the eye can see, and rain that seems to never stop pouring. So it’s the perfect time to bake cookies.

‘Yay, we are going to bake some cookies!’ Kuzco cheered while wiggling his tail. He grabbed his apron and jumped up the chair in the kitchen. ‘Would you ty it round Joyce, I want to help.’

‘Off course, you will be my sous-chef. Let’s see, where are the recipes for your favorite cookies?’ Joyce looked through all the cookbooks, but couldn’t find the recipes. ‘O dear, now we can’t bake the cookies, I really need those recipes. Will you help me find them Kuzco, you are an excellent tracker.’

hat rack

‘O indeed I am. I will find them for you, and maybe Jaap will help as well.’ He took off his apron and rushed to the hat rack to get his and Jaap’s hat and his pipe. ‘What are you doing Kuzco, it won’t be outside. If it’s lost, it will probably be inside.’

“I need to put this hat on, and Jaap as well, so we find what we are looking for. I have seen a great detective who always wore his hat while searching, and his friend as well. He always mastered the riddles.’

Sherlock Kuzco and Dr Jaap Sheepson

Joyce smiled when she put his hat on. ‘So actually you are my little Sherlock Kuzco then? And Jaap must be Dr. Sheepson. Well then, off you go, find my missing recipes.’

First they made a quick sweep around the house. Then room by room, sniffing on each and every thing, and again. ‘Wait my dear Sheepson. We need to do some deduction.’ ‘Deduction, what is that Kuzco?’ Jaap scratched his head underneath his hat. ‘It’s Sherlock for now Jaap, and it is a method of reasoning. You see, recipes for cookies are in a cookbook, right? And cookies are made in the kitchen, so the recipes must be in the kitchen!’ Kuzco sneezed all the smells he smelled out of his nose, so he would have a clean start when they entered the kitchen. ‘It really must be here, Sheepson. My nose is telling me.’ His tail was straight up, and so was his bum. His nose was stuck to the ground, and he was so concentrated that he even stood on his ears while tracking.

AAAAACHOOOOO!!!! Achoo! Achoo!

Kuzco couldn’t stop sneezing. ‘O it hurts! Sheepson, my nose is on fire. Achoo!’ His eyes were red and his nose was dripping. ‘O dear’, said Sheepson, ‘You sniffed at black pepper. There are grains of pepper on this piece of paper. But there is nothing written on it.’

‘What a foul play! Who-who-who-aaaachoooo!  Did this?’ Through his watery eyes he saw some black hair between the pepper grains. ‘Oh, he didn’t!!!’

‘Do you know who did it Sherlock? How did you found out?’ Sheepson gave his handkerchief to Kuzco.

‘Indeed I know. It’s so elementary Sheepson. Don’t you hear him chuckle? It’s Benniarty! Well you just wait Benniarty, I will tell-tale to Joyce of your foul play!!’

Kuzco sneezing

Joyce dipped a wad of cotton wool in cold tea and squeezed it out on Kuzco’s nose. ‘Benjamin did whát you say?’

‘No, Benniarty. And he put the black pepper there for me to find. And I know for sure your recipes are there. He put it there, so he was sure that it was not to be found! He truly is my nemesis!!’ Kuzco said, with drops of tea pouring out of his nose. Sheepson just lay there beside him.

Joyce grabbed Benjamin in his neck. ‘Benjamin, eh Benniarty, you naughty boy! Why did you do that?’

Benjamin sobbed, ‘Because you were going to bake cookies for Kuzco, and not for me. I want cookies too! So if I can’t have cookies, Kuzco can’t as well.’

Joyce gave him a little kiss. ‘I’m still a little upset for what you did to Kuzco, you could have just said what you felt. And then I would have told you, you would get cookies too, and all would be good. So tell me where the recipes are, so I can bake cookies for you lot.

But only Kuzco will help me, you must sweep all the pepper grains. And when you are done, both of you and Jools can lick the cookie dough from the bowl.’

And so it was, that stormy, rainy autumn’s day, the whole house smelled like chicken liver and garlic.

Captain Kuzco

Kuzco lay down on his chair, and exhaled with great content. He knocked the dottle from his pipe. ‘There. I won’t be needing this for a while.’ Giving one last cough, putting the pipe back in his box again. The last few days were wonderful. Kuzco had an important job to do. The Sail event was coming to town, and because he lives in IJmuiden harbour, off course he had to set sail. He was to accompany the largest tall ship. Without his help, it would be impossible to sail through the IJmuiden lock complex to the Port of Amsterdam. So he put his cap on like any captain would, along with his special pipe, the captain’s pipe. He asked two of his best friends to join him on this special occasion. He knew they would prove valuable crew members, because the very first time Kuzco set foot on a ship, they were there with him.  So seeing it’s Sail only once every five years, and to sail next to the leading ship, is quite an honour to be at.

‘You will be my sea men Nanouk and Duco. I will need your help, so listen carefully to my instructions.’ Nanouk and Duco were extremely excited. The channel was full of ships sailing next to each other, big and small, short and long. There must have been hundreds. But they all stayed behind captain Kuzco’s ship, because he had to stay near the leading ship.

at helm

Off course all went smooth. Where would they be without captain Kuzco’s expertise. ‘We must pay attention now friends, the wind is getting stronger. Nanouk, if you will stand at the helm, I will navigate. And you Duco, keep an eye on everything that’s happening on the water, and blow your whistle when somethings wrong.’ Aye-aye sir ’, both Nanouk and Duco took their duty serious.

sailor stories

The wind kept blowing strong, and Nanouk asked captain Kuzco to tell of his adventures on the sea. And between navigating, he told of the seagulls he had to chase, and of his ball getting lost in the current. And just when he wanted to start a new story, Duco blew his whistle.

‘Oh no, captain, someone fell from the mast of that tall ship, and it just sails on. We need to help him get out of the water!’ ‘You’re right Duco, we need to help him. Nanouk, steer to port side, and Duco, pull the man out of the water, then you and I must sit opposite from Duco, otherwise we will tumble. I will jump on the man’s chest to reanimate him and lick him until he regains consciousness.’

The young man was so happy he was saved by captain Kuzco and his crew. When they reached the Port of Amsterdam, the young man took captain Kuzco, Nanouk and Duco on board to meet his own captain. There were loud cheers from the crew of Mir when they arrived, and all three got a medal of honour. After finishing their root beer, and thanking the captain for his hospitality, Kuzco, Nanouk and Duco, went back to their ship. ‘Well, that is another great adventure to add to your stories Kuzco’, said Nanouk, while giving him a hug. Kuzco smiled, ‘And I am glad to have shared it with you two, Nanouk and Duco.’ And he gave them both a huge lick on the cheek.

Kuzco’s birthday

It was a day like no other day. It was a special kind of day. A day where the house was decorated with balloons and garlands in many colours, paper hats, and colourful tableware. A day Kuzco had never seen before, because it was his first birthday.

Kuzco was amazed with all this special decoration, and he loved playing with all the balloons that bounced on the ground. But what he loved most, were all the nice fragrant coming from the kitchen. And all the cookies and pies he got to taste.

‘What do you think Kuzco? Is it alright by you? Later this day we are going to celebrate your birthday in the park. It is a very special day today, because this is the day that you came into this world. And by doing so, made us so very happy. So just to remind ourselves how grateful we are that you were born, we celebrate this every year on the very same day. We invited lots of your dog friends and human friends, and we are going to eat all these nice cookies and a very special birthday cake. Are you going to help me put everything on this nice platter? And of course you can have a bite of everything, to approve.’

Kuzco was so happy. This is going to be the best day ever. Together with Benjamin he helped Joyce with the cookies and birthday cake, and when it was finished, Joyce put a beautiful baby blue ribbon with little white polka dots round his neck.

Kuzco always happy

‘Now you really are a birthday boy dear Kuzco.’ Joyce said. ‘Come, and lets go to the park.’

tearoom in the park

So off they went. Joyce, Ramon and Kuzco and all the balloons and cookies and beautiful birthday cake.

And while they sang their way to the park, other people began to sing as well. Kuzco was surprised to see he knew every single one of them. And was even more surprised his dog friends were there to happily sniff his butt and play with him.

There was so much going, that Kuzco didn’t know where to begin. His friends wanted to play and fool around with each other, and his human friends all wanted to pet him, and give him birthday kisses, and give him paper things to tear apart. All the excitement made his ribbon untie.

When Joyce put the birthday cake on a table, everyone was exited to get a piece from the cake. But the biggest and nicest piece was left for Kuzco. After their bellies were full, Kuzco played some more with his friends in the park and the human sat with each other chatting and laughing.

‘You have the best mum and dad’, his friends told him. ‘To have such a nice birthday, that is something not every dog gets.’

Kuzco was so happy, and when the party ended, he was so tired he couldn’t even jump in bed. So when Joyce grabbed him, gave him a big kiss and cuddled him, she put him in bed. Both Joyce and Ramon stayed with him for a while to see him fall asleep. And when Kuzco did, he had the best dream he ever had, and couldn’t wait for the next birthday to come.

little pond

A long long time ago, a little goldfish called Bruce was born in a cosy little pond that was owned by an old woman. This old woman loved her little pond, and she nurtured it with care. Every day she stood near the waterside and threw some fish flakes into the water. She knew they could find their own food, but she liked to spoil her fish from time to time. There were lots of fish that lived in the pond. All sorts and kinds. And little Bruce loved it there.

the Goldfish family

But after a long while, the old lady didn’t come by the pond any more. And thus the delicious food flakes as well. So the fish had to swim to surface to see if there was any food. And it killed them one by one. Because there were vicious predators who liked to catch them for lunch. So little Bruce his mama and papa Goldfish told Bruce to never go up to the surface. Always stay near the ground and find bits and pieces to eat there. But soon there wasn’t enough for all the fish that was left, even mama and papa Goldfish had to go to the surface to find food there. And that is how Bruce eventually was the only fish left in the pond.

He listened well to his parents, and never left the deeper parts of the pond. All though he had to eat strange things, that is how he could survive for many years. When the old lady was never to come back to her little pond, the pond was left to dry. And Bruce almost gave up on live. He struggled to stay alive in the tiny bit of water left, and when winter came, the mud was so near the surface, that it began to freeze. And little Bruce got colder and colder. Even his water bubble couldn’t stay whole due to the ice. So when it became so dark and cold, and he heard the cracking from his water bubble, he was ready to die.

red bucket

But then something happened. A big piece of frozen mud was shovelled in to a bucket. And in that piece of frozen mud, happened to be Bruce. Water was poured in to the bucket. It was nice and warm, and the ice started to melt. Bruce was in shock, but when he started feeling his fins again, he waggled his tail and shook his head, and all the frozen mud came loose. He could see humans staring into the bucket, but it wasn’t the old lady. Was this a rescue or were these the vicious predators, and were they  going to eat him?

He was glad to be able to swim again, and when he was poured into a glass bowl, he still wasn’t sure if this was a rescue. Because he couldn’t move. He could only go up and down. Was this some kind of special preparation before he would be lunch?

new home

But the next day, he knew. He knew he was rescued, and that he was safe. The people put him in a larger fish tank, with plants and bridges, and pebbles where he could shuffle through. And he could finally take off his water bubble, because the water was good, and little oxygen bubbles danced up and down. And the best part of it all was, every morning a new red-headed lady scattered food flakes in to the water and talked to him throughout the day. And for the first time in a long time, he felt he was loved again.

Note to story.

Now that the story is out, it explains his alter ego. Due to the strange things he had to eat to survive, and the lack of oxygen left in his water bubble after it cracked, he became a little Hulk. It only happens when he feels strong emotions, and it doesn’t stay long. Which is a good thing, because little Hulk smash things around like crazy. It is a rare sight to be seen, but I managed to capture the moment where Bruce his alter ego emerged. So this something special I have for you to see,

Bruce and his alter ego, little Hulk.

Princess Leia

grass spike

During summer, there is a massive growth of grass spikes. Even as a child I hated the sharp stinging feeling they gave when they got stuck on my sweater. So I can only imagine what it must feel like when they pierce through the skin. That is what happens when those grass spikes get stuck between the toes of a dog, or up his nose, or, what happens most frequently with a Cocker Spaniel, in his ears.

One particular summer, Kuzco visited the vet 3 times in one week, where one grass spike almost pierced through his eardrum. That’s when we decided to cut the toes of a sock to make a tight head sleeve, and put it over Kuzco’s head to hide his ears. And it works beautifully.

princess Leia

Except every summer when we put the sock on for the first time, he really is pissed off. All his dog friends come up to him and sniff with great lengths of time on his weird looking ears. I even think his is being laughed at sometimes, and I also believe that some friends even try to help him get free of it. But after being monitory once or twice, Kuzco accepts the head sleeve like it’s his collar.

But sometimes, we can’t help ourselves at laughing too. Because with the light skin coloured sock I always use, he looks exactly like Princess Leia from Star Wars. So when I put the sock on, and call him my little Leia, he gives an angry stare. But when I say it with a baby talk voice, he really is offended by it, and then I get the Annnngggrrrrry stare, like this one.
